Hitpoints on ships - Plus question on techs that incresase weapons/defense

I've noticed in all my games so far that my ships have far less hitpoints then the AI. Mine are around 65 and theirs is 120. I am assuming at least some of that is coming from racial picks(?)
When you build shipyards/foundries does that increase hitpoints? Are there other ways apart from picks at the start?

Also when you research tech that gives you +10 weapons etc. - does that apply to only ships built after that tech is discovered or is it applied retrospectively to existing ships.

Haven't really paid too much attention to military/war so far, and have been winning with culture. Thanks.

Maybe they have hitpoint boosting techs, military resources, or Tri-Strontium Steel. I haven't seen shipyards affecting hitpoints, even though they're supposed to.

Empire-wide stat boosting (techs, anomolies, etc.) affects all ships immediately.

The AI has a tendency to run with war parties that grant +50% hit points, especially on higher difficulty levels. Although shipyards and such do improve hit points, the AI seems more likely to go for military resources instead. A fully equipped starbase on a military resource can grant a +68% weapons, defense, and hit points boost, so it is quite a significant upgrade, one that you should actively pursue as well. All unit bonuses are retroactive, except those that increase hit points will require old ships to repair up to the new maximum.

If the Ai is war party, that adds 50 hp to their ships immedialtly , that can be increased if they choose racial picks that boots it. also some starbse military modules increase increase ship HP
