I am a kitten-rescued-from-the-tree fool

i am a fool
a kitten-rescued-from-the-tree fool
why would being shredded by sharp claws
so remind me how alone i am
begging a paper towel, i mop up the blood dripping from my fingers
no arms to hold me - so i stand as tall as i can
pack up my concert-in-the-park gear
and stride purposefully to my car
hoping the forward focus obscures the trail of blood
for all the others in the crowd
back in the car - trembling only after i am seated inside
blood has dripped onto my leg and shoe
i turn the car key with the other hand
and navigate the parking spaces to the open road
home is mercifully close
parking inside, i sob trails of mascara
stumble to find the hydrogen peroxide
struggle to tend the ripped flesh
no arms to comfort me
alone with bandages, blood and tears...
...
how would a southern belle have handled this?
would she have even rescued the kitten?
would she have fainted away when she saw her own blood?
Probably she would have sought help from an authority figure, and not been so independent and self-determined.
Can you have a southern belle who takes care of herself, or do they always exist in a community, in the context of a larger society?
... I think she would have asked for help, and maybe a kind southern gentleman would have lent that assist and strong shoulder.

If i am to be more like a southern belle, i need to ask for help - not be so all-fired self-sufficient. The choice is not rescue the kitten or don't. The choice is how to rescue the kitten. There are many ways to accomplish what you want. The southern belle includes the rest of the world in the solution, and not just herself.
Hmm...
