How to increase production

I've noticed that somehow the Drengin always manage to rip right by me in terms of production. In the early, early game I'm leading just about everything, then some of the AI players will have a massive increase in, well everything. I notice production first but eventually tech soars right by me (and I'm always researching heavily). Is there something I'm missing here? How exactly do you manage to raise your production so fast? Is it tied to population?

They're probably aggressively trading and funnelling the money back into their production.

Genenerally, I avoid this mainly by making the AI players give me all their money. This doesn't always work, and I always end up in an arms race with at least one other empire.

Addendum: The best way to end that arms race is to just wipe out the bastards.

My building queue is usualyl fusion gen then manufacturing centers, that gives you a nice start and speeds up production. Fusion gen is way faster to build than manufacturing center and inturn it allows the center to be built faster. In big systems I build starbases and update the mining pods that add to your production and the economic once too, there is one with 3 different marks that will upgrade your social and military production.

also biulding multiple starbases with mining and economics modules will help lowewr building time. On your economy screen you can also raise your social production slider bar or military production slider bar. Also the more econ bonuses and higher level governments will give you a more efficient economy and thus higher amount of money to mil/soc/tech
