Ok, so I was playing today at a medium sized galaxy. I started off really good. Taking over all of the desirable planets by me. Then all of a sudden, boom. The Arcean Empire declared war on me, and destroyed all my colony ships were attacked by battle ships, BATTLE SHIPS! How the heck did they get battle ships that early? I developed Star Fighters since it was all I could build at that point, and still, no match. I lost the game without basically even starting. This was the first time I played with the 1.02 patch. Did the patch change anything relating to this? Help me out!

how did you manage your development? For me, it's about even odds whether the AI will get to battleships before I do (and in some cases, they get there while I'm still building star fighters and corvettes). The reason, of course, is that the AI tends to prioritize offensive and defensive techs over diplomatic and medicine techs. Of course, I prefer the latter because I can use the trade goods to overcharge my economy long enough to maintain a fairly good momentum when I run out of minor races. :)
