What does this event do???

Almost every time i play a game i get a message, somewhat similar to:

"The [put race here] have discovered an ancient artifact and will grow extremely powerful over time. We must act now or be eventually destroyed."

- What exactly does this event do? Is there a resource on the map they captured, or is it more of an event which gives them increased hitpoints/ infulence every turn?

- What can be done about it? Is there anything that can be done about it instead of simply destroying them?

- Can a player also find this artifact?

Thanks!

Well,

I had it happen in four consecutive games. In two cases, it happened with a race I was hoping to have as an ally, but I dutifully wiped them out (well, one, the other surrendered).

In the third case, I was in a nasty war with the Arceans and allied with the Altairians and Torians. The Altairians (who were *not* a waning civ...the Torians or the Yor, who surrendered a few turns later, should've got it) got the event. I chose to ignore it and continued to culturally conquer the Arceans - since I was allied to the Torians and Altairians, and they were at war with the Arceans, the senate would vote me into war regularly. I'd take everything the Arceans had (tech, influence, money) to get back out of the war and continue building culture bombs to engineer mass defections.

In the end, I won an alliance victory and didn't really notice anything - well, except that the Altairians had more ability points than anyone else.

The event (If I understand correctly) triggers for one AI race (generally one about to die or is just withering on the vine). Every turn thereafter, +1% is added to one ability (of which there are 25 or 27). So turn 1 nets them +1% pop growth, turn two nets +1% hit points, and so on.

It's not as powerful as it sounds, and if you're friends with the Civ, ally with them asap. :)

Hey Phaedyme... Thanks for your explanation! This will give me a much easier time playing. I almost heartattacked when I heard about this event the first time, since the Drengin got the effect and were my worst enemies.
