Is Alliance worth the risk ?

Seeing how well friendly AI helps you (undercover) when you are at war, what is the point of being allied.
Pros:
- Most of the time, your ally will join the war with you
- can be your last chance in a dear situation
Cons:
- you are dragged into wars you do not want (when it is so easy to declare WHEN you want)

I use to avoid entering into alliances unless I want to speed up the endgame and achieve Alliance victory.

What do you think ?

I avoid alliances like the plague. What we need is a joint defense pact as an intermediate step between alliances and normal relations. Perhaps add another tier below that where we can form a loose coalition and choose whether or not to actually help our friends.

I actually allied with a race so that I could get sucked into the war and force a peace from the AI with both my empire and my ally's.

Phaedyme: I don't get your point. AFAIK, you do not need to be at war with an empire to have the "Make peace with..." proposal in your Diplomacy screen. if you want an empire to make peace with your ally, just declare war if you think it is necessary to force it do to so

Er, no, you missed my reasoning completely (not hard, I was far too unclear).

You can always get far more out of a weaker empire that wants peace with you than you can just by wandering over and saying "I will give you stuff to stop fighting this minor race."

If I ally with another race and get dragged into war, I can more easily get peace on all fronts along with tech, money, influence and the like.

In my large sub-normal game, I decided to throw caution to the wind and ally with the Torians, Arceans, and Vegans, traded them all their influence and cash for all my techs (I was far and away the tech leader), and am about to cut my trade routes with the Yor.

The only victory condition available is conquest, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out. As things stood when I wrapped up the other night, I had 75% of the galaxy's influence and was first in population (200 billion), military, and economy - all by a huge margin.
