About fleets beeing attacked

I have often built fleets for the purpose of beeing able
to guard my defensively weak ships with those with a good defense.

Then my fleet of 3 corvettes + 1 battleaxe is attacked
by a battlecruiser and for some strange reason my corvettes are selected to defend and of course I lose them one by one. If the battleaxe would had defended the fleet, I would not had lost any ship.

My questions are

1) Is this a feature that always the ship with weakest defense is forced to defend?

2) If so, does this also apply to those situations also were a non-military ship (eg. transport, constructor) is escorted by a military ship.
(the transporters are "defending" first)

Wait, in the fleet, where was the battleaxe in the order? I usually see the last ship to join a stack is the first to attack/defend.

Also, if you attack with a corvette, don't expect the battleaxe to take over for its defending rounds.

From a post elsewhere, sequence is based on ATT+DEF (not sequence added to stack), and effectively we are stuck with it.

The game should pick the defender with the highest odds of success instead, like SMAC does for example. Furthermore, the game should have an optional post battle pause so players can find out exactly which unit they just lost, like SMAC yet again. Did I mention a pre-battle victory odds confirmation would be great, just like SMAC? ;)

While the order of attacking or defending is fixed (to Att+Def?), it shouldn't be a big problem re-calculating it in case of defending, since ships with higher Defense than Attack add half their Defense to their Attack value (according to the manual, though it seems to be correct).
