what version do i have

with all the auto downloding that goes on how can I be sure A) what version I have and

what changes have been made to the game mechanics

Stardock Central. On teh software tab, shows the version installed (and any extra available), and if you click on GC, you will see a history link in the bottom left, which has info about whats in the patch.

Also, where can one see the version when playing the game as well?

i believe if you are in a game and you click on menu, it'll show it up top.
