Snooping on Your Neighbors: How to Locate Alien Home Systems Through Fog of War

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but here goes. When you start a new game, you can locate all the alien home systems by switching to the F9 tactical map view, and then scroll around the map examining the star clusters while periodically hitting F8 for a sector influence report. Apparently the influence report bypasses the fog of war, so you can easily locate ailen home systems by looking for the high influence sectors. Feature or bug, this certainly helps you decide in which direction you should send your first survey and colony ships.

Ack! More cheese I'll have to try my next game! Fortunately, the only cheese I've found that wasn't fixed before I got around to trying it got boring fast.

This sounds like an unintentional feature. Sort of like really long range, passive sensors that pick up a particular energy pattern emanating from certain areas of the galaxy.

"Sir, our SETI program has been searching for signs of alien life since before the destruction of the star gates. The star gates may have been destroyed, but their energy signatures were strong enough that SETI has been able to estimate the galactic coordinates of known alien civilizations. For now, we are unable to pinpoint civilizations within specific star systems, but that will come with improvements in our sensor technology."

End transmission.

If you really consider how influence works, this method of spying on your neighbors isn't really that cheesy on second thought. Influence spreads naturally after all, and you're bound to find out where your neighbors are soon enough. Since loading a saved game resets influence, people who can't devote large blocks of time to playing GalCiv are at an inherent disadvantage if they don't employ this tactic after all.

The really odd things in this game are the following:

1. You don't start with a universal Translator. But you've been talking to the others for YEARS now before you give out the plans for the new Drive... How odd is that...

2. Why is it that until YOU find all the races they do NOT appear in the UP? I'd also really like to see a league of Non aligned Worlds for all the independants...
