but they’re dead
cool flags over coffins

the blood on the number doesn’t cover
the need to know clause or the trembling of
every mother’s fear
forty-five not quite fifty
not a hundred
hardly worthy of a glance in the pages
of “The Human Times”
they don’t count the little deaths
the ones that happen with the breaking of voices
the clashes of reality with futility
the skipped beat of heart
forty five is only one to the visible aching
they don’t count others
those deaths are private and silent
and only found in the dry depth of a
mother’s last tear.
