A little advice from another (relative) newbie. Don't expand so fast that you can't protect your borders. Scouts are nice for making contact and exploring the map, but 200 of them?? Be sure to have combat-worthy vessels able to protect your solar sytems before you say no too many times...

Other races will bully you if you don't have a standing military. You can either wait till they do and then lease some ships, or build a few here and there to keep yourself up to their level. Also if you can get the military resources you can increase the power of your ships dramatically! One game I was still building Battle Cruisers and they could beat dreadnaughts and avatars at the end of the game... because I had 2 maxed out military resources. I won ;)

Well, the scouts do have value beyond exploring if one is in a position to have enough ships to "wall off" a resource or planet. But, that being said, once a war starts then the little scouts are flies on the wall that are easily swatted. (I like keeping drones and scouts near every opponent planet and resource I can to watch the traffic.) To keep that war from being started, a defender or battelaxe around every colony helps. Add a trade route or two connecting to the major race that might want to thump on you and you almost assure peace from that party. Peace through strength and profit, one could say. Expand too fast while unprotected is asking for a war.

Sure, one does need to grab as many good planets and resources as possible to get a good early position, but there is a key skill in knowing when to transit from land grab mode to drawing the borders and then decide where to go from there. If peace is your path, sit tight while culture bombing or researching your way to the win. If war is the way, then carefully build the transports and task forces and carefully take your targets down in a methodical manner that leaves all the core holdings protected as well as enough garrison ships to defend the newly conquered targets.

The first time you play, the real enemy isn't the other AI players, it's the large number of options available. LOL

The first thing to do is to learn how to budget your economy. Play the game with Fool AI's (so you can worry about your own empire for now), and a medium galaxy (big enough to see stuff, not so big as to take several days to play). Then try to colonize/research/build without going into the red. Once you figure out what works for you, try a new game with higher AI intellegence.
