Any suggestions for Montreal/Quebec City?

I'm going on vacation with my family next week for 2 weeks and was wondering if anyone who lives there or has spent enough time there can recommend places to eat/shop, galleries, activities, etc, that won't be on a tourist guide. Also, does anyone know much about the local music scene? I'm not sure where we'll be in Quebec City, but we'll be staying Downtown in Montreal. I appreciate any responses.
