Where do starships actually protect their systems?

When ships are built, they are visible in the system screen and not on the star map. When you "launch" them, they appear on the star map below the actual system. Do they protect their systems from attack their? Or are the systems only protected of the starships are not "launched."

Starships in orbit defend the systems they're in. Launching them means the system is no longer defended.

only take your ships out of orbit when you intend to attack or move to another system.

Or to use them to escort constructors or guard starbases.
