Military Power = Sum of Attack Points (Defense is Irrelevant, Cheese For Everyone)

I have been carefully observing the fleets of my empire and several minor races lately and arrived at this conclusion. The numerical value of military power is equal to the sum of attack points; defense is completely irrelevant. The result of this is that Corvettes are the best military power inflator in the early game, with Anti-Matter Missiles taking over in the later eras. This method of calculating military power makes it very easy for human players to exploit the AIs weakness in evaluating military threat. Not only can a store of Anti-Matter Missiles deter the AI from attacking, you can also use them to enforce peace in the galaxy by trading them to weaker races and balancing military power. I don't know if this is a bug or feature, but I hope it is corrected soon.

MojoJojoUK: Because it won't benefit from the war? When you go to war, you loose influence, you might loose trade, and heaven forbid, the person you declared war against might just crank up a war-time economy that *CAN* do you harm. In fact, I seldom build a large standing offensive force, I just make sure I've got enough to hold off anyone until I've had time to shift gears from a peace-time economy to a war-time economy.

You're taking a risk when you declare war, and there needs to be the chance of a payoff. Declaring war just because someone can't hurt you *NOW* is bad planning.

I'd rather take on someone with a strong attack military and an average economy than someone with a strong defensive military and a strong economy any day of the week (or month of the year, in this case).

If the AI could recognize a defensive opponent and switch exclusively to raiding commerce/colony ships/constructors, then it wouldn't hurt as much, but I'm still going to gear up the combat machine and do some damage so that the AI doesn't get any delusions of graneur in it's head. I find the Drengin are always a little calmer after you've smacked them with a rolled up newspaper.

This thread has probably been the MOST USEFUL on my playstyle.... no more getting threatened all the time wondering my my Defender legions aren't helping.

It's also made me realize that AMM are actually a decent unit if used properly (the first couple I tried failed to destroy their target, I gave up on them)... I already see the huge problem in using them for deterrence and also war.... your rating tanks everytime you use one.
