Newbie: Constructors

Can someone explain to me how to upgrade a starbase? Do you send more and more constructors? and what exactly does that do?

Also, whats the best way to defend these bases?

To upgrade the base you send more constructors. Each Constructor you send you get to choose what module you add o the base. Each module has its own effect and can only be built once per base. To improve its defense add defense type modules. Also it helps to keep a couple ships nearby if you find you need more defense than the modules provide.
