How does influence work?

I don't understand why my influence is always dwarfed by the aliens. Even at the start of the game (before starbases) they have a much bigger area. I usually only own the sectors with my planets, and the AI owns everything else. How do they gain influence over empty sectors?

In the early game (pre-starbases), influence is usually based largely on population and will have a radiating effect from the sector the planet is. Since the AI is quite good at maximizing population growth early on, they're likely just outgrowing you and you're seeing that reflected in their influence sphere.

Naturally it's a bit more complex than that, but there's a good read on how it works in the encyclopedia section on the GalCiv site: http://www.galciv.com/encyclopedia.asp?action=showpage&page=http://www.galciv.com/influence.html
