How do you colonize a planet?

I just bought the game, I started it, there was already a colony ship there. I sent it to a nearby system with habitable planets, and nothing happened. I can not find a colonize command, months and months are going by and the ship is just sitting there.

The same thing happened with the other ship the game starts with, I sent it to some space debri and nothing happens. :notsure:

once u sent it there, it shows u a little window that lets u change the name of the system

then u'll see on the RIGHT HAND SIDE there is a list of the plannets in the system, move ur mouse over to them and u'll see a little ship hovering :) colonize the habitable ones :)

I've found giving the manual a glance before starting the game is very helpful in situations like these.

Do not feel too bad about asking this question. I too missed it when I was first playing the game, and a number of early posts asked the very same thing. That's how I found out!

Another thing which is not immediately apparent is how to colonize additional inhabitable planets in a system you have already settled. When you produce a colony ship "in-system", you do not have to "leave orbit" and exit it/re-enter, etc. Instead, you can simply load up the number of colonists you want on the ship and mouse over the new planet you want to colonize. The cursor will change to a colony ship when you pass over an inhabitable world on the right-side panel. Just click, and your colonists will land. There will be no popup - you'll just see the planet production screen to set your first Mil & Soc programs.
