Newbie question: ships in orbit

I read that ships repair quicker in orbit ... other than that, do they defend better or got other bonuses?

I am tempted to leave Defenders in orbit.

I *believe* they defend better in orbit, although I *know* you can build social projects like planetary defense and omega defense systems(?) that make battlehammers, etc. really tough.

Where did you read that ships repair faster in orbit? I've been wondering about that but haven't seen it happen in my games.

Yes, supposedly they defend better as well.

Repairing in orbit is the only way to do it prior to Basic Repair, but it isn't by a large enough amount to be noticable later in the game when you've got some serious repair rates.

Ships repair significantly faster while in orbit. They receive a +50% bonus to their attack points while there too, multiplied on top of any other bonuses they may receive. I'm not sure if starbase bonuses are affected though; I never found it very useful to build anything but production or cultural modules.
