Using tab key for "find" function fails if ...

Try this. With a brand new game, turn off autoturn, send the colony ship "Discovery" to tile next to a star you want to colonize, move the scout "Mockingbird"
around as needed for exploration of space. When the colony ship arives at its destination make sure the scout has completed all its moves before colonizing the
planet with the colony ship. Now colonize a planet in the system and complete all of the colonization activity normally.

Now, there are no ships selected. The keyboard tab key will NOT find the scout AND the enter key does not advance the game through the next turn function to the
next month.

This is an old bug that had been reported many builds ago and, I thought, had been corrected. But here it is in the Alpha 5 (build date 4/2/02).

Jack

The Tab key only finds ships that have moves left. If you press the turn button with the mouse does it work?

Yes. The only way I can get the next turn function to work is to have a ship selected, either with the
"find" button, by using the ship list and selecting one, or positioning the screen view to a ship and
selecting it.

Do you mean, you can only get the enter key to go to the next turn if you get a ship selected, or you can only go to the next turn if a ship is selected, period?

Good question! Checking it out showed an additional symptom.

The turn button works, that is it does advance the game to the next month.

BUT... It still does not auto-select the scout ship. Only the find button will
do select it at this point. And the enter key still does not advance the game
to the next month, even after the turn button had been clicked. Only
having a ship selected allows the enter key to advance the game to the
next month.

Ok I think that I have fixed this problem. Do you play without AutoTurn on a regular basis?

I play with Autoturn off all the time unless there is a specific problem I am looking for that needs it on.

That's good...I hate playing with auto turn off.

I have the impression that most people hate pressing the enter key (or clicking the turn button) for every turn, but I
experience a feeling of loss of control when the game goes to the next turn and I am not quite ready. I am an advocate
of the program disabling the turn function until either all takable actions have been completed or the user response to
a query of "are you sure you want to end this turn". I guess I am just different.

Well, most of the time I have all ships on either sentry or autopilot. so that makes me pressing turn/enter alot anyway :)

On the other hand, I might think it would be nice with a feature that bring "auto-turn" further. If I have all ships on autopilot or sentry, and have my planets do whatever project they are doing, Im getting bored pressing enter 30-80 times in a row. Then it could just auto-progress with new turns until something happens or completes. It would automaticly stop in some situations (not sure which) and would be able to cancel it with a click. I wouldnt want it to rush off to fast tho.

Most useful when one are playing on a small map and only have a few systems. (ie it doesnt happen alot of things)

Hmm maybe not after all.
Probaly only now, when testing, I see a need like that.

When I dont test I play on larger maps where things happens more often.

One of the things I have noticed is that most people test on the smaller scales (maps, galaxies, whatever). This leaves the fun of
testing on the larger scales to me. :D
