Minor races and culture

Up untill today I thought minor race's planets would never defect due to culture, but today one of my planets defected to join the I-League and then cultured back to me.
Is the I-league a special case?

nope, in a game i played this morning, the 3 alexians sector defected to me in the first 5 turns... i was going for cultural victory, so my settings were customized for that :) unfortunetly, for my survival i had to ally with the drengin, and later with the altarians, so i won by alliance instead...

Minor races *can* defect, it's just very rare (Brad says they have a high cultural resistance).

I think the smaller they are, the higher their resistance. In one of my games, there was a sector with two Alexian systems, one Debian system, and one Altarian system. After pumping up my influence, the Altarian system defected first, followed by the Alexian systems. I didn't get the Debian system to defect until they were conquered by the Altarians.

"I think the smaller they are, the higher their resistance."

That would make sense, the I league is fairly large ATM.

Lucky! I've won by culture twice and had minor races right next to my main Culture sector and never have them defect.

I had a minor race defect to me once in a game. One thing for the wishlist - I wish the influence icon displayed the level of influence of the minor races as well as the main races. It would be nice to be able to compare the human influence vs. that of a minor race in the same sector. Perhaps this is by design but I'm not sure.

There is a big difference between minor races and event races. The Alexians area a minor race. present from the start of the game with a good planet. These never expand outside their starting sector and can defect to you but are very resilent. Event races such as the I-League or the fundamentalists are created by an event and behave similar to the major races except that they cannot build starbases. They can also defect (much easier).

To be able to immediately colonize any yellow stars in their current sector. If there are any.

I've actually started a game with a minor in my starting sector, and 3 other yellow stars. We had a fine and merry colonization race for the stars to start the game off. They eventually joined my culture, BTW.
