Convincing the AI to defend with battlehammers

It seems that the AI will keep defending with pesky defenders or ocassionaly with battleaxes even when battlehammers are available for them to build. This is based on my observations from 5+ games on 'crippling.' So, the question is: can we convince the AI to use battlehammers more extensively? They can be terribly effective at frigate/battleship stage, given their cost/defense ratio. When dreads come around, of course, they are less useful, but still pack quite a punch due to its obscene amount of hit points.

Battlehammers for defense? Heck, they're my primary offensive ship once I get them up until I get Dreadnaughts! :) I agree, though, that the AI could make better use of them.

I use bhammers for defense because of their short range, low attack value and slow speed. ;)

Yes, before dreads, I typically garrison each planet with 2 BHammers & 2 BAxes. I haven't seen the AI punch through this yet - they're both cheap enough that I can replace anything that gets destroyed and I'm never *that* far behind any of the AIs that come a knockin'. Plus, since they're also good on offense, they work well for smacking any transports or lighter ships on my turn before ducking back into orbit :)

Of coure, if the AI started using BHammers more, that would really make planetary conquest into a bitch, which I guess would be the point for some people :)
