What ships do you use to defend?

im wondering because after the begining of the tech tree, it doesnt really look as if there is a designated defending starship...

you get the defender, then move up to the battleaxe, but then what do you defend with after that? every starship ive seen after battleaxe has a higher attacking value than a defense value, so i assume they arent supposed to be defending...

I like battlehammers and anti-matter missiles. After all, the best defense is a good offense. :)

battle hammers are the third defense ship. After that, you don't get anything new.

what do you use to defend really late in to the game? like when avatars and overlords and such are flying around?

Avatars and Overlords.

Anti-matter missiles are still good then, depending on your luck and stats, one easy to build anti-matter missile can destroy that expensive avatar. Several occurences of this can easily give you a military advantage as avatars and overlords build at a slower speed and cost more maintenance then anti-matter missiles.

Just make sure you have some backup ships to take care of transports and other low class ships.

Of course, the problem with A-M missiles is that they *suck* at defense. They'll never kill anything larger than a starfighter (IME). You have to use them solely for attack, early and often.

I build 1xBattleAxe per inhabited planet in each of my border systems to start, moving them as I expand. I change to BattleHammers once those are available. Eventually, I replace them with Dreadnoughts, Avatars & Overlords.

I also maintain 2-3 Fleets: 2 for offensive operations against enemy Empires, and 1 as a reserve/counter-attack force should an initially neutral AI declare war or an alliance trigger.

I supplement my border worlds with AMM's, and generally try to (eventually) build Eyes of the Universe. The increased scan radius allows me to launch my AMM's at an invading force in transit, at a stand-off distance outside my system. This usually weakens (or outright eliminates) even Avatars and Overlords. I subsequently attack with my Reserve Fleet to eliminate the threat.

AMM's are also very useful against TR's. I can usually destroy multiple TR's with one AMM strike, ending any threat of losing a system. Frequently, my AI opponents will sue for peace once their invasion TF is destroyed.

I wish you could set ships to auto attack anything IN the same sector as it is in.
This would allow for less micro management with AMM's and other sector defence ships...
