Newbie Q: Invading planets

Is there some late stage of development at which one has to be in order to invade planets? Even though I defeat the enemy ships around a planet (so that there's no shield left), I can't seem to invade it. How is invading done, exactly?

You need to move a transport or combat transport into the planet when there are no enemy ships left in orbit.

I've trade with a transport, but nothing seems to happen. When do you get a combat transport?

You get combat transports when you research battleship tech, but a regular transport should be able to invade if there aren't any defending ships left.
