Help against AI

I just got this last week and already got used to the awesome interface and how the game works.

My problem is, when I play against the Normal intelligent AI, the game simply cheats badly. Wait, let me repharse that.

The Drengin Empire cheats.

I played around 6 normal games so far and every single time the Drengin Empire is the most dominating race in the entire game. They get technology faster, their population higher then anyone else, and they seem to mass-produce fleets no problem. When I get a covette or a battle cruiser (I am a war party), they already have a dreadnought. Not talking about one either, but spamming the galaxy full of them.

So some help would be nice about this and any strategies about this. I thought StarDock said the AI doesn't cheat at the lower difficulty..so why does Dregin seem to kick all the other race's ass so easily?

They're probably leasing most of those ships and extorting all the other races for cash and tech to help pay for it. While the Drengin might usually dominate the early game, they're not cheating while they do it.

Second what Norin says.

The Drengin believe in blackmailing all weaker races. Especially the Minors. Be a bit low on that military standing (like, last, with 0 Minors about), and you'll hear them come knocking, demanding lots of money, and any techs you have that would boost them along to Dreadnaught, or improve their ships.

That's their secret. They blackmail until the lesser races go bankrupt, and then take them over. And continue to do so until they win. The bee-line for Battleship and Dreadnaught.

I third that. Try setting the Drengin to 'good' and watch how they act quite a bit different! Also if they don't have a very good starting position they're not nearly as threatening. I completely ruined them in my last game by using their extortion tactics against them, since they were way too weak to deal with me ;p

In my current game, I went colony-happy and left the Drengin with 2 planets, in the corner sector (also left the Torians with 3 planets in the opposite sector). With the nasty Drengin out, however, the Yor have become the military aggressors (and they only have 3 planets!).
