RealNetworks Targets Apple-Battle Looms

Half Price Songs, For The iPod

RealNetworks, developer of the RealPlayer technology, has announced that it will offer songs from its on-line music store for half the price of Apple and that the songs will be playable on Apple's iPod devices.

Real will use a new technology called Harmony to make the songs playable on the iPod, eliminating one of Apple's advantages. And that technology has raised serious issues. Real has not licensed Apple's technology. A spokesman for Apple said Real had "adopted the tactics and ethics of a hacker" to convert the formats. Apple is investigating legal action.

Real's marketing campaign says "Welcome to freedom of choice" and continues that the new RealPlayer "Supports over 100 secure portable devices, including the iPod." Looking at the RealNetworks news page, they are clearly going after Apple. With headlines like "Apple's control-freak tendencies could crush iPod" and "Apple should share the music" and "Apple Replays Old Mistakes" it is obvious who their target market is: Apple's iPod user base. See the Real news site at: http://www.realnetworks.com/info/harmony/?src=081604realhome_1_1_1_1_8_1

Now, neither of these companies is known for their business ethics. Apple's entrance into the music business violated their decades old settlement with Apple Records over the use of the Apple name. RealPlayer, which is included as part of many OEM builds, is almost universally loathed by computer cognescenti. (Fancy talk for "geeks.") It is considered spyware.

I mention Real's OEM connections (with companies that include Dell, for example) to underscore that this is a battle of giants.

Opinions about the companies aside, it is clear to me that Apple should own its format and that Real has violated that.

Man do I hate RealPlayer. I hated the older versions, though at the time they had some functionality since their annoying proprietory video format was sometimes used, but the newer RealPlayer seems to have just about no redeeming qualities.

Then again, I don't particularly care if Apple suffers either, if they end up "fighting," I can only hope they'll both end up worse off for it.

When you think of it niether of these companies care a great deal about those who buy their products. The support from either one leaves a great deal to be desired. A good example of that is the new G5 Mac computer; three of the fans went out on my G5 just two days after the warranty. Apple basically let me know that it was just two bad. Now the cost of those fans was not all that much; it was just the idea that Apple wouldn't back up there product. As to Real the only dealings there has been as mentioned in previcous blogs, and that is for some reason the are able to get their player on most new pc machines.

I am iPod owner (really like it), but do not use Apple's music format—use only MP3 format. Why use something that is not transferable between all PC platforms—really doesn't make sense.

As far as I can determine, Real sued Microsoft in December of 2003 (see http://www.microsoftmonitor.com/archives/002021.html) and the relationship has been at best lukewarm since. The suit was for $1 billion and was over Microsoft's bundling of Windows Media Player.

According to Rob Glaser, CEO of Real "RealPlayer currently has 350 million unique registered users and 4 million of those are premium players." Earlier this month, in speaking about Real Player 10, Glaser said "RealPlayer 10 supports all major media formats, including Windows Media, MPEG-4, MP3, and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), a format used by Apple Computer's iTunes', leading Glaser to dub it the "first universal player."

I used Real for live365 when it was fairly early in it's development but follow Kingbee's advice and rip it out by the roots.
Too many other options from lots of sources.
