Whats the minimum starting position you will accept without hitting ctrl-n

on a small galaxy,medium and a large.I ask this question because some people have compared this game to chess.But in chess you pretty much start out the same except for white which gets the first move.It actually kind of bugs me that your starting position effects the game so much.But I suppose it culd be a testament to the game AI that you have to have a comparable starting position.With the higher intelligence levels has anyone won with a treacherous starting position?

Totally depends on the style of game being played. If I have +10 or 15 PQ, that can change my starting position strategy a lot. Same for map size. I don't like to re-roll starting positions since that feels kinda like cheating to me, but a lousy position in this game is a killer.

If I have a good Earth (base 18 or higher) and at least one other good planet visible from the get-go, that's usually good enough for me to start.

I usually just take whatever the game gives me (I've only used Ctrl+N once, to try it out), even if the setup looks bad for me.

I once had a Sol with an 18 Earth, no other planet higher than 9, and no other stars in any adjacent sector. Was going to Ctrl+N, but, just for fun, I explored 2 sectors away, and found four stars, with a total of 7 15+ planets (one of them was 22!). That became the heart of my empire. :CONGRAT:

Well Im assuming you will only use ctrl-n after you use up the range of your colony ship on the first couple moves and find very little planets to conquer, not if you dont find any in your first sector.

untill i knew about Ctrl N i took whaever i had now i take 19 or better.my curent game i started with a 22 and there are like 3 26 planets and 2 20 planets AND a 22 planet.all are colonized of course

I will sometimes ctrl-n if I am in a single system in the very corner of the galaxy, with the next closest system being like, 2 sectors away. I might play through a game like that, but that is a huge disadvantage, imo.

I restarted once when I literally could only get to 2 planets.. I haven't had many problems with this since I started playing with scattered planets. Generally you can find at least a class 14 planet and extend your range enough to get a good base going.. or there's always creating SBs, but doing this in the first 10 turns or so just to reach more planets generally doesn't bode well..

I use Control-N all of the time depending on how I want to play:

Isolationist/Xenophobe = corner of the galaxy.
Diplomat/Trader = near center of the galaxy.
