USS change

I'd like to see a box under the Empire Name that allows you to choose your own 2-4 character acronym to preface your ships.

i.e. TFN - Terran Federation Navy

Yes, it's nothing but fluff, but it's GOOD fluff.. and hopefully wouldn't be too hard to code.

"I'd use TFN too, I always call my empire the Terran Federation"

Wait, that's mine as well. How many of us use that as our empire names? Have we been affected too much by Star Trek?

I use United Werewolf League. You Dont want to know what I've named the other AI's.

In my current game I'm leading The Space Vikings in a quest to rule the galaxy. :D I'd love for my ships to be named SVS, but I'm just too lazy to rename them all so it's still USS. :(

wampyre, Yes I do. But then I don't know what's good for me either. ;p

I'd prefer if they weren't named USS at all. Most of the AI ships aren't.

Why do they get a random number tossed on their end? Why not just use a counter?

When I bother to name my ships, I tend to use:
SCT-# NAME (for Scouts)
DEF-# NAME (for Defenders)
CORV-# NAME (for Corvettes)
BA-# NAME (for Battle Axes)
BH-# NAME (for Battle Hammers)
BC-# NAME (for Battle Cruisers)
SENS-# NAME (for Sensor Drones)
BS-# NAME (for Battle Ship)
DRED-# NAME (for Dreadnaught)
BT-# NAME (for Battle Transports)
SH-# NAME (for Star Hawks)
SUR-# NAME (for Survey)
FORT NAME (for Star Bases)

I never bother naming transports or constructors or freighters or colony ships. They won't last long enough to matter.

Star bases tend to be named after their star system (when just a plain ole sector enhancer), or there resource theme.

USS Hero I leave named just that. Good enough. ;)

An enhancement so that you didn't have to retype the whole name when you go back to edit a changed ship name, would be very nice.

Also, I will make quick renames for ships, even if I haven't bothered to name my ships, when selling them to the AI. Makes them easy to find.

" Have we been affected too much by Star Trek? "

Is star trek the united federation of planets? My Federation takes its name from David Webers books :)

Mine is the Earth Federation, ala Gundam ;), but If I could change the prefix on my ships, I'd likely Turn into the Terran Confederation, TCS (Wing Commander).

Some times I use Rhineland Republic.. (Freelancer)

You know I once saw a Yor ship named "Die Humans". What makes it even funnier is the fact that I was allied with them at the time.

in #7 'is' should be 'isn't'.

I think they got their "die humans" fram an event where their leader is killed while visiting your planet. They declare war and someone provides them with free ships, all named "Die humans".
Or maybe they just love you but use German when naming your their ships :)

Empire nemes I've used.

The Age of Aquarius (Pacifists) of Wavy Gravy
The Compasionate Conservatives (Evil War Party) of King Dubbyah
The Corporation (Mercatilists) of B. Vaire Pelt
The Space Dolphins (Populists) of Flipper Lastlaugh

OK, maybe it's just me that finds this amusing. ;p

But, I too, would like to use something besides USS. Even though I usually don't name ships. Except ships I give to alien cultures ... I like to see if they made a difference. Then they get names like Baitfish (Dolphins) or Promotional Giveaway (Mercs)

David Weber's TFN from books like _In Death Ground_ and _The Shiva Option_? Odd thing that... The books are based on a game called _Starfire_, originally published by Task Force Games, and (IIRC) one of the designers was Steve Cole (I can't check my facts right now, let me be!) who also designed _Star Fleet Battles_, a miniatures style boardgame based on _Star Trek_ (the original series). For those of you who don't know what _Star Fleet Battles_ is, check out _Star Trek: Starfleet Command (the original, Empires at War, and Orion Pirates). That game is based directly on the boardgame. ANYway, I'm not saying that David Weber's TFN comes from _Star Trek_, I just got carried away.

Anyway, I've used "Terran Imperium," the "Terran Entelechy," the default "Terran Alliance," Babylon 5's "Earth Alliance," and "Human Technocracy."

Of course, I often forget to change the name, so I find myself 50 turns into a game, playing as a peaceful research empire with lots of trade and my empire name is something like "Sparta" ruled by "Leonidas"

I'd like to get rid of the USS too.

Oh, yeah, I think someone should post this in the suggestions thread. It'd be nice to change the ships' prefix.

Time for my 'dumbest question ever':

How do you change a starship name (and a governor name for that matter)?
For the starship name, select a starship. Then click on the starship's name in the little box on the bottom right of the main interface area. You'll get a popup prompting you for a new name - type one in.

It's not immediately obvious, so not a dumb question at all.

I use Terran Alliance, Terran Federation, Terran Imperium, and Terran Technocracy depending on which victory condition I'm pushing for. But Solarian League would be nice too :)

Astro, since I use three of those four (or rather, two of those three, since one is the default when you install), you're creeping me out. :)
