Stardock : Why do i have to pay tax?!?!?

Today my precious GalCiv-game came and there was a little note that i had to pay 22 US-dollars in tax.

Thank you stardock! Very nice of you! This must be the single most expensive "#¤%& game i ever bought a total of 76 USdollars!!! Ok, its good but..hell i didnt even get a printed manual.

You could have written "gift" or something everybody does to stop things like this.

Disappointed!

Hey, this was a fun thread. Since I'm also Swedish, I'll participate in the bashing:

Sweden is a socialist dictatorship disguised as a free market democracy. There, now I feel better.

If you want to simulate Swedish taxes, just set the slider to around 65% and watch how happy your populace becomes.

Concerning imports; if Swedish customs recognizes a packet as foreign mail order, they will hold it until you have payed the 25% VAT (which btw does not directly finance healthcare since it is a nationwide tax) and customs fees. Happens to me once in a while when ordering DVD's from Amazon. Very annoying, but strictly by the book and definitely not Stardock's blame.

Heh, for a few years now, the state of Michigan has been trying to levy sales taxes on internet and mail order purchases. Every year when I fill out my tax forms, there is an area for me to "Voluntarily" report how much stuff I have bought via the internet so that I can "Voluntarily" pay sales tax on it. LOL!

The funny thing is, the way sales tax in various states works. Some states do not tax item sold via mail order or internet. Some states only tax the items if its sold to a resident of the state. Some states tax EVERYTHING sold from within thier state. In Michigan, if you purchase an item from a state that levys a 4% sales tax, they want you to pay the difference between Michigans sales tax (7%) and the state you bought it in. Also, Michigan wants you to pay local sales tax on items you bought on vacation anywhere else then brought into the state. So if I go to florida and buy a t-shirt, then come back home, they expect me to declare this and pay the 7% sales tax. This is totaly rediculous. Thats not a sales tax, its a purchase tax!

In GalCiv if you build enough morale improvers and pick a morale bonus at the beginning then the happy medium between tax percentage and happy people willing to pay tax is at 100%. So, maybe if Sweden uses its money to build a dozen Disney Lands then they won't have a problem. Although they already have the alps and Swedish women.

Ummm...

"Although they already have the alps and Swedish women."

Last time I checked, the Alps were mostly in Switzerland, not Sweden. (France, Germany, Italy and Austria too - but they're no closer to being Sweden.)

But they do have fjords... (see Hitchiker's Guide, et al.) ;)

"Sweden is probably the only developed country that is actively pursuing to become an underdeveloped country. Healthcare is already wrecked. You earn most money unemployed. Don't even think about starting your own business. Well, I think they're gonna succeed! ...Just a pity that I live there. "

Disagree.
Canada is also on the same path.

Mine is at the Post Office.

I'll need to fork out £ 8 for the tax.

This is the first time that has happened, maybe previous stuff slipped through the net ... well at least all the important "medicinal" shipments did ... ;)

"if Swedish customs recognizes a packet as foreign mail order, they will hold it until you have payed the 25% VAT". Wow, and I thought Dutch VAT was already high (19%), but now I found Sweden pays 25% and Belgium 21%. MUST have something to do with our LIBERAL Government ;) Anyway, there are ways to fool customs, I bought Drengin through Internet, buying/downloading software IS still free of VAT in the EU, and then Brad offered very kindly to send the CD by mail as well. Since I had already paid for the game by creditcard, downloading the software, the CD itself was of course valued at nil in the accompanying bill, so there was nothing to tax by customs :D

Yes, those Corporate Welfare mothers are destroying the US. If a company can afford to lay off workers while making millions in profit, I think it can pay taxes.
