one eyed joe doesn’t remember before
being 8 he says he was dead then
but can’t remember
he tells me “I used to be real smart, I knew
things, then I had an accident, but I don’t remember.”
he shares his chewing tobacco and we watch the moon
take a seat over the cross on top of saint pat’s
he wants a computer, he thinks he might have been
a physicist and he wants a beautiful mind, but he was
dead then at 8 and he doesn’t remember
studying the tapestry of tattoos covering his arms
and legs, not the kind you pay artistic bikers to crave
on tender asses of co-eds
but the kind placed absent-mindedly with a stick pin
for hours documenting the boredom of institutions
with bars before the glass
it’s not hard to see how he could forget
“they’re gonna give me a job--if I’m smart enough”
but he still can’t remember when he was smart
he pulls his shorts high over his belly mutters another
string of words toward the driveway
“I was dead then.”
I can’t help it, but I think that's a good thing.
