Minor Civs as your Buddies

Recently I got myself out of a jam by using one of the minors. Having allowed the Arcaens to get too powerfu AND allied with the other major races (except the extinct Drengins) I was in a jam, specially as I was heavily dependent on trade with the other majors. Soooo, I noticed one of the minors was at war with the Torians And the Arcaens. I began moving my ships into Arcaen space and then transferring them to the minor, who would then proceed to wreak havoc on traders, transports, space stations, etc. Eventually the minor was crushed, but I had bought enough time to catch up and fight on better than equal footing.

I have on occasion used a minor race to keep an enemy or two busy, but I don't think I've used one in the sort of preemptive fashion you tried. I love selling trade goods to minor civilizations; you can amass a pretty good bankroll that way.

One thing I do, is use the Minors extensively as trading partners for my freighter runs. That way, I am not contributing to the economy of a potential enemy. Usually, I find diplomatic relations are more dependent on military strength (parity/superiority) and alignment than trade.

The only Minors I don't trade with are the I-League. Any goodwill you engender with them is lost when you have to declare war should one of your own major systems get destabilized and elect to join them. Furthermore, every AI Empire is continuously at war with them, so even if you are their friend, you end up just losing out on some expansion possibilities.
