The "No Diplo" Challenge

I'd like to challenge folks (especially the top players) here to a "No Diplo" game. I will also try this.

In this game, there is only one new rule:

--You can't initiate any diplomatic contact with other civs. Rather, only when and if they contact *you* can you then trade tech, cut deals, etc. And even then only for that turn! To talk to them again, you have to await another contact. Yes, there are belligerent ways to have them contact you --park a battleship in their favorite sector, for instance-- but will that strategy help or hurt your cause?

Backstory:

In this scenario, human beings have developed an 'understanding' of the alien races that leads some to believe that only if and when an alien civ *initiates* contact can they be trusted in negotiations. The science upon which this theory was based, Dr. Harmon's 'Theory of Xenopatholophia', is both highly secretive and highly controversial.

As you might imagine, therefore, this policy has caused great debate --even some violent protests-- by the Senate and various xenophilic sections of society. Some argue that only active and shrewd negotiations with alien civs, even if human beings distrust them, will give us the technological and economic edge so desperately needed to secure a strong human future. A re-active rather than pro-active diplomatic stance is, they plead, a sure path to human misery in the near future.

Others merely argue that any diplomacy based on distrust will yield nothing more than a self-fulfilling prophecy and that with this passive approach we are giving what may be otherwise peaceful alien societies a reason to attack us.

Still, the most powerful elements of goverment refuse to relent, and a majority simply have taken a 'wait and see' attitude. Very few want to appear over eager to deal with alien civs in any event since doing so often leads to the end on one's political career and/or public labels of being an 'aliophile.'

Will you still be able to win with this "No Diplo" rule in effect? Try! Please reply if you plan to try, then please come back here with an AAR (after action report)!

Good Luck!:D

Ah, I should clarify: You can only negotiate with the *specific* civ that contacts you on a specific turn. That is, just because the Arceans contact you in a given turn, you can't also then that turn negotiate with all the other civs.

I play the majority of my games this way.

When they demand something, I tell them to f*ck off. When they declare war on me, I go beat the crap out of them. When they beg for peace, I clean them out.

The game plays more quickly this way.

The 'challenge' here, of course, is that you can't go tech whoring or over-manipulate who is fighting with whom.

With all AIs set to Genius (which is how I will play it), my guess is this will make the game much more challenging and, as Thongor says, faster to play.

as Yin said, this style is definitely more challenging because you can't use diplomacy to bankrupt the AI (well, at least until they start begging for peace).

I play on Tiny maps, so starting position is critical for success.

"Funny how your proposed rules mirror current events."

Believe it or not, I had that partly in mind when I came up with the thread!

Thngor: Sounds like you and I like similar challenges! I found my Large map win against genius AIs too drawn out and slow for my taste. Also, I didn't like running through the tree tech to the last tech.

Well I tried a "No Diplo" game on a small map, all AIs to Genius. Let me just say: I think it's impossible to win! I'm not sure how this plays out on lower levels, but in this game, it became clear that without pro-actively trading tech, you just fall behind with no hope to recover.

I did notice, though, that the AI *rarely* contacted me: Does this mean that it's rarely contacting others? Only the Arceans seemed active even though I had discovered all AI players...

Well, here's to hoping 1.03 is making the AI better traders so tech whoring isn't the loophole is can be...

The biggest change to my style would be early game where I can't reap the benefits of trading with minors. Not a huge change though if you go for a military conquest game.

Try this with all AIs to Genius and please tell me if (how) you can survive!

I never research Fusion or Corvette Technology. Thus the AI often comes to me saying nice things like, "Hey, do you want to trade your pitiful Dreadnought tech for our powerful Fusion tech? We're doing you a favor"...
Thus by not researching a useless part of the tech tree, you can make the challenge easier. Also, by not building a military early, you will be threatened. Don't give in, trade.
I might try this...
