A Peaceful Galaxy

I've played a handful of games now. Do you have to go to war to prevail?

So far, I've had to expand in order to win.

The games where I've failed to expand, try to play as a peaceful 'builder-type', I've been able to create a nice civilation. Sooner or later one of the other Civ's becomes immensely powerful and wants only to crush me into dust no matter what.

Has anyone had success playing a game without an expansion war?

I've played games where I have not fired a single shot, nor had one fired at me. It is possible! Just grab a bunch of planets in the beggining, grab resources, then use diplomacy to keep others off your back.

It helps to pit the others against eachother, fueling them w/ techs and ships, in return for money of course!

And watch the resources that are grabbed by others, if their starbase falls, grab it.

It is definatly possible, just watch out and make sure noone gets too big of a lead in the military graph otherwise they will extort you and possibly go to war.

Just because you don't plan on attacking someone doesn't mean you shouldn't build a military. The only way to ensure peace is to be prepared for war.

My problem is the exact inverse. The only way I seem to win is through culteral victory. Given I have only played on simple and beginner. Tonight I am going to start a imperialistic evil civ to see if I can win on military might.

triCritical, on the lower levels the AI is very passive which will let you win just about any way you want. If you just build peacefully, you'll win by a cultural victory almost every time. If you go to war, they usually will roll over without too much stress so enjoy being the evil conquerors.

If you don't want to win via culture, you should switch off the cultural victory condition in the game setup page.

beginner? why? in my opinion there is no point to starting low as it is not a challenge. i always start at normal no matter what the game and try to win it sevral times the same way to ensure it wasent a fluke.if you really want a challenge try to win cultural or technilogical victory .

Winning cultural/tech/alliance against normal AI isn't so hard, I think.

I am usually on normal, trying to win a tech alliance when playing peacfully. So I go late into the game.

Usually, one civ eventually trounces all of the others and becomes a superpower. It seems a superpower can't handle letting a smaller civ exist.

I guess the art of it is not letting a superpower come into being- a feat I find difficult without going to war. I don't mind going to war, it would just be nice to be able to play peacefully- I hope to have a few games like Potatoe.

To prevent superpowers you can give techs and ships to that empire's opponents. Then if they become too powerful you can do the same to the other guys to keep a balance.

Some players don't play the game for a challenge. I don't play GalCiv to "push myself to my limits" because losing isn't fun. That may sound childish, but after 10 hours of building up an iron grip on the galaxy, I don't want to suddenly take a losing streak and loose it all. Plus, when I start on games like GalCiv, I can't even wrap my brain around what I'm supposed to be doing so I just try testing the waters. I don't need to get my but handed to me when I'm doing that. Thats why people play easy
