Pop Decrease After Colonization

After I colonize a planet, my population often seems to drop. It will drop sometimes from 100M to just 5M, even on PQ 15 worlds and higher. Is this normal, or am I mismanaging my empire somehow to cause this to happen?

The only natural cause of shrinking populations is low morale, so you should check into that first. A population drop from 100M to 5M on a PQ 15+ planet indicates an extreme morale penalty in action however. This would suggest that perhaps in addition to repressing tax rates, your empire is also being destabilized by outside forces, and probably by one that is much more powerful than you are.

I was wondering if the game modelled immigration or something. Are the people actually dying or are they just moving somewhere else?

The population drop from low morale reflects people not paying taxes.
