AIs not colonizing except for Drengins

Hi!
I am currently in my second game. All AIs set to
beginner (I'm still learning).
The Drengins seem to be the only civ (other than me) that is making progress. The Altarias for example did not colonize at all - even though they had a quality 18 system
in the sector next to their home sector. I built two star bases to reach that system all across the galaxy (medium size). The Torians and Yor aren't doing much better.
Due to their weakness the Yor and the Altarians have already surrendered to the Drengin.
In my first game I got defeated by the Drengin after they had conquered the other civs. This time I have been protecting the Torians and supplied them with tech.
We managed to push the Drengins back, take some of their
Altarian/Yor worlds close to our borders and destroy most of their starbases. Cultural victory for the humans seems to be approaching now.

Are the AIs better balanced at higher difficulty? At "Beginner" Yor and especially Altarians seem to be a lot weaker than the Drengin.

The Drengin definitely seem to be the headkickers of the galaxy at lower levels. :)
All the AIs I played against in my first game colonised other worlds and the Yor were actually holding out against the Drengin pretty much by themselves, though I was slipping them a couple of weak ships on the sly. ;)

A "Sub Normal" the level above Beginner, the AI seems to be a heck of a lot better. The Drengin know I'm weak, so they're at my throat from the start. The Arceans were cosying up to me early on, until they realised I wasn't going to give them much help, then they turned on me too.

They're definitely smart little buggers. :)

It's the same in my current game. The Drengin wipe the floor with all the other major races. The Altarians even surrendered to me when they got their butts kicked by the Drengin, but unfortunately their planets were on the other side of the galaxy and morale was so low that they switched to the I-League a couple turns later. >:(

Markus, too. :)

I think it is good that the Drengin make the game a little bit more difficult at beginner level. I suppose if the Altarians were better it would be much too easy (for a good aligned player) to team up with them to win the game.
The Altarians should not ignore good quality worlds when they are close by though. I'll keep an eye on what they do next game.

When you play on beginner, the AI's are just that. Beginners! Makes the game much easier to play and allows beginner players to get teh hang of it without over zealous colonisation by the AI's. All sounds about right. Just up the intelligence level when you're ready and Altarians will definitely colonise that class 18 planet!

Interestingly enough, the Drengin collapsed in my current game. The Altarians, while good, seem to be the strongest threat in my game.

@Panzerdoetter

Maybe you are evil? ;)

Not this time. I haven't been offered any events so far, so I've been decidedly nuetral. However, since I am a Dread Lord, freed from the accursed precursor prison, the Altarians have reason to be worried. :)

In my first game on sub-mormal settings the Drengin were hammered by the Altarians who at the same time turned on me and then took all my systems.

I have had to move down to lower difficulty setting as i am no match at the moment to the AI.

On my recent game the United Planets left me fuming though as i was well ahead in the tech race and so they voted to share techs for the next 2 years and as a result as the computer put it the others cleaned up and i got nothing

All tech advances that occur during those two years or all existing techs and advances? I would just turn off research if it is the first. If it is the second, I think I would grind my teeth in furry.

In my first game, which I'm still playing, BTW - with AI's set to beginner, the Drengin never expanded beyond their home planet. They did build a starbase next to a resource, but never did anything beyond that. The Arceans and the Yor were the powerhouses in the game. I say 'were' because I already wiped out the Yor. Now I'm working on a strategy to get the Arceans next. It's great to see the amount of variety possible in a game. Great replay value.
