larry lives on the third floor
he’s a 4 year vet from 66’ to 70’
he’s on the benches in the evening
smokes a pipe and enjoys the company
of all the ladies
he has regulars and sitting right or left
of him is a prize the over 60 crowd of
women hold in high esteem
he carries himself like common sense
the army gave him order and medals
ranging from bronze to gold twice it was
purple-RAW
he has a zig-zag scar running up his leg
to his ass and the winters piss him off
he talks in a daydream daze about being in that
war, he was a green beret, the serious
shit, he has regrets and doesn’t trust the
government and when I ask about the killing
he’d say “yes, I killed.” and that’s it
that’s all he says, it seems to be enough
one day when the sun was sinking behind
the crossed steeples of st. hedwig and the
save-a-lot he said his name’s on the memorial
black alabaster roman block letters
he said “sometimes I forget I’m dead”
and puffs on the red meerschaum pipe
staring at the cross across the street
