How do trade routes work ?

Of course I understand how the work, however I do not know what the small ships are for (other then shooting in war times). I thought it was just for that, and nothing else, but a post from Brad seemed to incline that the little ships have more influence ?

Depending on where in the route the little ships are, the more money you're making from the route.

Here's one for ya:

When you build a starbase in a sector through which a trade route runs, does only your empire benefit from the increased trade, or do both empires? I had thought previously that only the starbase owner benefited, but recent comments by Frogboy seem to indicate otherwise.

Whats the rules/logic behind that wyrenn ? Like, when do they give the most ? How much do they fluctuate etc.

I think the small ships are just a way of low-lighting the freightors in the trade route so as to remove some ship clutter. When you first send or receive a freightor, it appears regular sized, but after the route begins, you get the smaller image.

You may praise my brilliance, if I'm right.
