Here are some tips:
1) The game currently does not bring up the technology screen to choose something to research. You'll want to do that. I suggest choosing photons since that gives you a ship to defend yourself.
2) Increase your spending right away. You can do deficit spending rihgt now with no penalty. If you don't increase spending, you won't be able to build anything remotely fast.
