Possible spoiler? But I have to say it!

In my game last night I was floored by what the Altarians told me while I was ramping up to wipe them out militarily....

If you like to find these out on your own, don't read any further... Otherwise, maybe you've seen this, maybe not, but this was my first time hearing this after maybe 10-12 games...

Possible spoiler below

Ok, Like I said, I was ramping up my military and moving them into position to remove the Altarians from power. It was me, the Yor and the Altarians, I just pumped out my final dreadnaught strike force and was moving them into positions along side my terror/culture stars on the fringe of their empire when this message popped up from the Altarians:

"When I was younger, I used to play strategy entertainment consoles. In these games, as you call them, I would first build up my attack force around the unsuspecting computerized players. Then I would act. The computerized players were unaware of this. Human, we are not computerized players. We are a proud and ancient sentient civilization. Please disband 'so and so starbase' from 'such and such' sector immediatly."

I was floored! A few short years later I was left with only my starting planet and a healthy dose of humility.

Brad, Devs,
This is the type of thing that makes a good game Great. Keep up the great work!

I've only seen that message once but it cracked me up :)

I got it right before I was leveled by the Arceans. Yeah, it cost a lot to get them to stop. I still can't sit down.

I got that message once when I had two starbases with military upgrades on them in Altarian space. The odd thing was, I was using the Attack bonuses to blast away Yor and Arcaen ships (who were both at war with me and the Altarians). I was also trading heavily with the Altarians (only 40%, but still...). They were "warm" to me.

Then destabilization kicked in, the Arcaens wanted peace... then the Yor wanted peace... then the Altarians demanded (with the above message) that I get rid of the starbases. They went "neutral" on me within a few turns.

Stupid Altarians... ;p

Yeah, I got something similar from the Altarians. I was building up starbases in their sectors and they contacted me diplomatically. They said, "Look, we know cultural conquest when we see it." I was floored... and delighted. :)

And then I went to war with them and exterminated them from the Galaxy with my terror stars. But it was nice talking to them.

Hehe you think that's funny check out these I found in the English.str (left over from beta testing apparently):

[35_WelcomeMessage_2] I am the %s. And I am here as a test computer player for the beta. But I'm still going to try to kick your butt.
[35_WelcomeMessage_1] I am the %s and I'm set to neutral which means that I might decide to squash you or I might now.
[35_WelcomeMessage_0] I am the %s. I'm set to evil for this test game. That means that if given the chance, I'll grind your civilization into bone flecked jam.

and...

[35_WantsPeace_A] So... the thing is, another boy made me do it. I was just kidding around you know? Besides, I'm just a test civilization. I won't even be in the final game. So let me live. This beta is all the glory I get!
[35_WantsPeace_B] Yea, you kicked my ass. Probably cheated. Yea, go post on your precious message board. Now let's make a deal.
[35_WantsPeace_C] We don't like you, but the %s have been pressuring us to make peace with you. What do we need to do to come to terms?
[35_WantsPeace_D] I have powers you know? POWERS. Political powers! So let's make peace now. You have impressed me and it takes much to impress me. Whoa! That dog has a fluffy tail!
[35_WantsPeace_E] Give us peace or I will sing songs from the Phantom of the Opera sound track. 'Night time sharpens... heightens each sensation...' I'll keep doing that until we make peace.

"Whoa! That dog has a fluffy tail!" OMG I love that! :D

You know... Brad is... one... sick... puppy LOL

And the moral of this story is...

Military buildups in or near the territory of your foe tips your hand. Whenever possible, use blitzkreig tactics. Remember: What your opponent doesn't know CAN hurt them! :)

These messages are much more frequent on higher intelligence levels, especially if you try cultural starbases! Sometimes they demand you give the base to them. That can be a major ouch!

idleprocess,

What got me interested in the game was a screenshot of the Arceans saying exactly that. I think I still have a copy of that screenshot somewhere on my hard drive, but I do not remember where it was posted.

I laughed when I got that message.
I didn't laugh when I refused to hand over the starbase and they proceeded to wipe me off the map!

The other cool message I got was when I was in a allied with the Altarians fighting the Yor. I beat the Yor down to one juicy Class 40 planet. Ships surrounding it so the Altarians wouldn't invade before my troops got there. As my troop ship arrived the Yor said -
"We surrender human. But just for spite, we will surrender to the Altarians!".
So the juicy planet disappeared from under my nose!

I like the rejection messages.

[HumanRejection_1] Go to hell.
[HumanRejection_2] Nuts.
[HumanRejection_3] Oh? Well here's a message for you: Kiss. My. Ass.
[HumanRejection_4] How do I put this diplomatically, ah yes, cram it!

I was actually going to mod this file to add "Nuts" to the list of responses but looks like Brad beat me to it.

Glad to see these responses can be modded so later on, when I get really frustrated, I can put in something a bit more nasty. ;)

Hey those are some cool things you found kind of an easter egg type of thing. I will have to link my forums to this one for sure. Thanks for sharing that have to find out how too make it work in an actual game. :D LOL :d

I found it amusing that the computer catches on to some abuses that I've done, such as attack the computer, do damage, make peace, and then attack them again on the next turn. After a few times, the computer catches on to this until eventually I see something like "We are a proud species and will fight to the bitter end. We will not make peace only to have you attack and then make peace again."

Somehow I get the feeling they didn't appreciate that, but then again I was pure evil, so that is expected of me ;-)

Has anyone gotten this message and won? It seems everyone who got the message got their ass kicked.

I got that message quite a few times in one game where I was already immensely superior to all the other civs.

[35_WantsPeace_D] I have powers you know? POWERS. Political powers! So let's make peace now. You have impressed me and it takes much to impress me. Whoa! That dog has a fluffy tail!

The above is very similar to a scene from a Simpson's episode where Homer sees a man who looks just like him and says, "OMG that man is my exact double." He then sees a dog and says "OMG that dog has a fluffy tail" and runs off chasing the dog and giggling gleefully.

Any chance Brad is a Simpsons fan? ;)
