I will never be another cog

I’m not a law abiding man
I have no wish to pretend that I am
otherwise
and I will not act as if the rules make
sense and money isn’t the cause

I pity cops, no--really I do
to sell out to your hopes that the
system is right and worth dying for
only to find it’s just a job after 10 years
and all they have done is enforce the
status quo and keep the well-heeled
from falling too far into the clutches of
near-do-wells and ambitious wannabes

I pity ordinary joe more though
working his 40 hrs and counting his
pennies and procreating the next generation
of mindlessness
everyone a cog in a giant machine that
maintains it’s equilibrium by replacing the old
with the young
taking spirits and souls to homogenize into
plain wrapped dribble
how often do you find a suit in hot pink?

I don’t give a shit if you think the homeless
man is defective or anti-social
they are real and they too struggle with the
forces of sameness
they are told sameness is safe and will protect
them in the winters ahead
what crap

the only interesting people are the ones that
fight daily to get thru the mundane-ness of over
repeated action of the same day after day
it’s true, they scratch their asses and babble to the
air
but they see the unseen and tread without much
care
finding the knowledge of suffering to be an ongoing
revelation of why and how

no, I am no friend to the rules
you won’t find me in a black gray or sensibly
neutral color suit
I may die my hair blue and ask why
it will keep me from god
wear jeans with ripped out knees and
t-shirts that wear the stains of night after night
a demanding to know why
why must it be wrangler and not levi’s and who
is calvin Klein anyway

I will not be another cog in this mess
not even the lube that greases the machine
I am the anti-man
I could never stay inside the lines anyway
I’ll always be the one that didn't fit
