Intro doesn't fit with storyline

"This era ended when the reckless Terrans invented 'Hyperdrive.'"

"A ship with Hyperdrive was capable of instantaneous travel to any point in the galaxy."

Uhhhhh, so how do we get this Hyperdrive? Can I meet the Terrans in the game? I would like to develop this technology!

;)

(methinks the storyline has changed since the first scripts)

Well the key problem is the word "any" up there. I just figure that the team putting the movies together was not associated with the actual development and so they went with the most impressive description possible ;)

The ingame text for your various drive improvements makes it pretty clear that you can hop to any point within a certain range of your start and that each drive improvement allows you to make more hops more quickly, resulting in faster "movement". Being able to traverse a few dozen light years in a month is still pretty impressive.

I realize this. And I believe you realize how the intro sounds. :)

How about giving us the Bloater Drive from Bill the Galactic Hero?

OTOH, the (written) intro states contact was restricted to diplomats who traversed between the known civ's, and the (oral) intro says many systems were left untouched (un-contacted) during this era...

So I'm happy with what SD wrote...

(Not a criticism, just an ob...) :)

How about putting the Infinite Improbability Drive in the tech tree? ;p

Well, there'll be plenty of whale-meat and geraniums if the defense ships have that drive...

You know, I just don't want to see an Excalibur be in every point on the map at once.

Besides, none of the other races can use it - they can't brew a nice cup of tea (computer game reference).

"How about putting the Infinite Improbability Drive in the tech tree?"

And change the killer robot event so they're looking for the Heart of Gold?

Oh suuuure, everybody goes for the easy-peasy Douglas Adams references but NOBODY bites on the many jokes possible for Harry Harrison's series. >:(

Technically, it's not instantaneous, but when you consider the fact that Proxima Centauri (the closest star to earth) is 4.2 light years away, and that it can take you from a month to 5 months to reach the nearest star (not just yellow), that's still faster than the speed of light. Because of the theory of relativity, the crew would think they arrived before they left, when in actuality, it's at least a month later.

Well then, we must fire the people who made the intro, because I was told there was instantaneous travel and I'm not getting it!

:D

You know, just because it says you can get TO any point in the galaxy instantaneously, doesn't mean you can start FROM anywhere....

You just have to start within your ship's range of the target, and voila! - you can get there instantaneously. ;)

It is instantaneous... to the people on the ships. When you travel at the speed of light, technically you reach the end of time (because of infinite time dilation), so you start going the speed of light, and BAM! Within no time at all (literally), you've reached the end of time, and you cease to exist!

HOORAY FOR LIGHT-SPEED TRAVEL!

I'll get in touch with my inner nerd and defend the movie making team. :D :

From reading the tech descriptions in the game, it seems like the hyper-drive the ships use works on the idea of "folding" space. Like how the ships travel in Frank Herbert's Dune series.

Folding space doesn't require moving at light speed (or even moving at all in the traditional sense) because the goal is to stretch, or "fold", the fabic of space until the area of space your ship is occupying gets to your destination.

Imagine a small bug sitting on a rubber band, and then stretch that rubber band as far as it will go. Even though the bug hasn't moved a muscle, it has still travelled a distance. That's how I think the engines are supposed to work in this game.

The movement would be instantanious, and could technically move you anywhere in the Universe...as long as you have enough energy to stretch space that far. Which is where the tech improvements in the game come in, they allow the ships to travel farther by finding new ways to supply more power.

So if all that is true, then the movie fits. The hyper-drive could take you anywhere, as long as you are capable of powering it enough. :)

Nice explanation with the rubber band...'til you realize what happens if your finger slips... LOL

Sorry, couldn't resist!

LOL If your finger slips, then that bug better start praying. ;) LOL
