Exploring

I just played my first game on gigantic. I spent almost all the game moving my scouts around trying to discover new resources. In previous games I've found that even if I get the Eyes of the Universe, I spend an indordinate amount of time exploring. It's getting a little tedious. Does anyone have good strategies for automating exploration?

At the beginning I'll send my scouts as far as they can go in several different directions. If I can get Eyes of the Universe the process will be even faster.
