Extreme slowdown - masses of "assert error in file g:\...\starship.cpp at line 2877"

While playing a gigantic galaxy, all of a suddon the graphic performance slowed to a crawl.
After exiting I checked the debug.err file and it is 20MB. I managed to be lucky and clip the
following message from the debug file:
---------------------
ASSERT ERROR in file g:\projects\galciv\source\starship.cpp at line 2877.
----------------
I don't have a "G:" disk, so this looks very quirky.
I did not risk scanning the entire debug file, but after just a couple of pages the above
message was all I saw repeated from page top to page bottom.
I am sending the save file to Cari.
Restarting the game resulted in the same symptom, but this time the debug file was smaller.
It is packed almost wall to wall with the above message.
