Starbase sphere of influence

In my current game, I have 3 systems near a sector border. 2 systems are in one sector and the 3rd system is in another sector. If I build a starbase in one of the sectors, but between all 3 systems, with production upgrades, will that starbase affect all 3 systems or only the systems that are in the same sector as the starbase? What is the range of the starbase's influence?

As far as I can tell, the starbase bonuses affect only the sector they're in, regardless of *where* in the sector they are. So in your case, building a starbase in the sector with two systems will give bonuses only to those two systems, even if the starbase is physically very near the third system. There is no 'sphere' of influence. It's strange, but it does open up interesting strategies, like building a massive military starbase right in the corner of an enemy's sector, far from his planets and associated orbital ships.

You can also create a ring of starbases around the edges of a sector you own, thus blocking ships other than your own from getting inside without destroying a starbase, whilst still providing economic bonuses to the systems inside the sector, and pushing out cultural influence in every direction. ;)
