Something ain't right

I’m not a prophet or a seer of futures
I cannot claim an inner vision deeper than
my faith in God
a power He is and beyond the magical of
tarots and witchery
his book, his word, his being incarnate and
as mysterious as any oracle of Delphi or reader of palms or
signs in the stars

but there is no need of divining with witch sticks or
spilled entrails
you do not need to dissect a calf’s liver or consult your
astrologer to see the inner sickness and banality
just under the skin deep with the charisma of caring
even a little bit
the empty boredom of making intimacy common and
soiled in fashionable disaffection

I am a sinner like all daily turning left when I
should go right
because I wanna go right
like Paul I do the things I shouldn’t
and I crave indifference like all viruses
I am a mold of frightening
color and most likely to be found under the
rim

but I have a certain grace to the favor of the
deity
I live and see the obvious and can be measured
in scars by the foot
the wisdom I have is best understood as the result
of being wrong time after time
it’s a sad knowing and I know with no need of props
things are just not right

so tonight I say prayers and light candles and burn
incense spill salt and leave milk and cookie out and hope
tomorrow will not be the last
