What does the population of a planet do?

I have noticed on planets with a 18 billion population that if I make 3 Combat Transports in a row filled to the max (15 billion troops) that the planet produces just as fast at 3 billion population.

Am I missing something here? The planet in question had a 22 PQ.

Population does contribute to production, but is nothing like as important as PQ and modifiers. In another thread, I noted that a PQ15 planet with a pop of 1 produces ships/cash etc just as fast as with a pop of 300. Although pop size does make a noticable difference at small levels, I suspect that with lots of enhancements/buildings/research etc that pop size is less and less important a determinant of production as the game proceeds.
