Ships

My suggestion for a ship:

I'd like to see an unmanned ship that goes uncovering the map by itself. An uncontrollable "Voyager"-class ship. It also brings on a message to the aliens, like the real voyager

Two possibilities:

1. It can just can move X-moves before it auto-decommission itself. The moves-cound would vary upon which mapsize you play.

or

2. It can only move X quadrants from the system were it was built. When it has uncovered the map it decomissions automaticly.

Or is it just me beeing lazy? :)

I suppose there will be a research-item too, that uncovers the map? (Or two, one that clears all, but leaves FOW intact and one _very_ late in the game that removes FOW)

Maybe that could backfire. What if a less civilized race finds the probe and reverse-engineers your technology and uses it against you? ;)

Hey I have an idea why don't we have an autogame button that just plays the game for you :-)

I typicly make paths between all systems, but after that there is a lot of unexplored space that I dont bother uncover. The voyager class ship would do that. Just to keep things tidy and neat. It would take too long for the voyager class ship to uncover the complete map for it to be useful for discovering new systems.

I try to uncover the map as soon as possible so as to find all the anomalies. All those free techs and free ships are what makes it possible for me to keep pace with the other races in the research & defence in the early game (hard difficulty).

Well for technology tree solutions there's are sensor bouys not too far down the line that you basically use for solution #2, and I think there is a late game tech that allows you to see everything, but I could be mistaken.

Do non AI/player races evolve and use ships or just stay stagnant on their planets until you find them ?

In resposne to Sander...In the OS/2 version there was a tech called "Eyes of the Universe" that showed the full map. However, I often found that I'd already explored most of the map (except for gigantic ones) by the time I got the tech. The larger the galaxy, the more handy that tech is.

They move around a lot. They have the full knowledge of the map at the start of the game (or so I have heard) including all the anomalies and planet, so they don't have to do any exploring like the player does. I often find the AI races grabing a planet or anomaly just before I can get something there.

Players always play as humans. There are 5 AI races that you always compeat against (and as I have been testing the alpha on as hard a dificulty as I can, they usually clean me early on). Hard to compeat when you can only build fighters and they already have 5 battleships per planet, plus scouts, defenders, etc. :)

Umm there might be the rebel/pirate (from the later OS/2-versions). I dont know, stardock? I cant remember seeing any statement about the rebels.

Yes, if all goes according to schedule there will be pirate class ships randomly poping throughout the galaxy (Brad hasn't talked about them for a while, but I'm almost positive they're still planned).

Would the rebles/pirates have their own class of ship or will it be existing ships that have gone over to the dark side...?

Also, another idea for a ship is some sort of ship that allows us to take over another players ship. Or even perhaps some sort of planetary based technology, "beam the population of australia onto that battleship, will you scotty"... just kinda thinking out loud.

Hmm didnt the OS/2 version have rebels that took over a system or so if the population was unhappy for a long time? What about bringing in those? Not that Ive had unhappy pop for quite some time now, altho it's just a tweaking issue :)

There were a number of NPC groups outside of the main alien races, including pirates and rebels. There were also alien races that would beam in from other galaxies and mix things up.

That's all I'm going to say. LOL

Thanks Sander...anything else you want to see in the game, you greedy feature-whore? ;p

I'd like to see a technology or something that lets your ships be able to get anamolies.

They don't start with battleships...they just know the path to research them the quickest.

The pirates are going to be fun. I like blowing ships up(particularly when they're on the way to colonize a class 20 planet that I want) but I've found that it's not a good idea to piss off the Drengin too quickly. :)

Fredrik,
I think what you are talking about with the unhappy populations in the O/S2 version
is that the population rebelled, which is how you lost the planet. This would not happen
until you changed your government from the starting government type.
Cheers,
Jack
