Help with Strategy

Okay, I win easily (without restarting) on Normal levels. I upgraded to 1.3 and tried increasing the difficulty, and my head gets handed to me on a platter every time. I'm cutting back on their intellect but I'm still getting trounced.
Could people post their opening game strategies? I'm curious what other people do?
My main problem is that, with trying to colonoize quickly and build constructors, that by the time I'm building corvettes, they seem to already have dreadnaughts!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
