n00b: How does combat work?

So I'm the Tading master of the universe, but the Drengin are at war with my favorite trading buddies the Alterians. My military bar is about equal to the Drengins, so I figure I can say "Bitches! Don;t do that!" and lay a little smack down. But I always lose.
I realize this is because I don't know how to pick my fights. The best I've doen is taken out one and a half freighters before losing my battle hammer. I hear of legendary fights of one ship versus 99 others, and taking little to no damage.

How does the attach and armor system work?

Also I feel like I am asking a stupid question, one that is asked by every n00b who can't find it on a web page. I tried searchng past posts, but no avail. I think this forum needs to be BBS style.

Have you tried the Make Peace treaty to make the Drengin leave the Altarians alone?

I'm not sure what you mean by attach and armor system.

When you research techs that give bonuses to weapons, hitpoints and defense, they are applied to your ship without you having to take it to a shipyard or anything like that.

Combat in GalCiv is pretty simple. Each ship has three important factors. Attack, Defense, and Hit Points. Each ship takes turns shooting at the other ship, with the attacker always going first. Each shot is the done as two random numbers, the shooter's number is between 0 and his attack value inclusive, the target's number between 0 and his defense value inclusive. If the attacker got a higher number, the defender looses a number of hitpoints equal to the difference between the numbers. If the target survives (has a positive number of hit points remaining), the target becomes the shooter, and the cycle continues. There is one common exception to this. If the defender (not the target, the ship that was sitting still and got jumped) has a higher defense rating than attack rating, half of the defense rating, rounded down, is added to the attack rating for purposes of the combat.

Now that you should have a handle on what the numbers are used for, you can decide what improvements you want to pursue to increase these values. Mining a military resource will improve the attack and defense value of all ships. (I seem to remember that it also improves the base defense value of star bases, but not the value added by defensive modules). Certain technologies will improve your attack and/or defense ratings. see http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_weapons.htm for a list of all techs that will improve your weapons ratings, and http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_defense.htm for a list of all techs that will improve your defense rating. Furthermore, as a ship wins combats, it earns experience, which will raise the level of the ship. I'm not sure what the level affects (I'm playing the first game where ships are fighting enough and surviving to level up right now), but I'm pretty sure it improves the defense of a ship, and possibly the attack. Ships in orbit of planets also get their attack boosted, and the boost is greater depending on the planetary defense social projects on the planet in question: http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_planetdefense.htm

Then there's planetary improvement that improve the quality of starships. http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_starshipquality.htm has a list of all the social projects (buildings) that can increase the quality of starships built at that planet (but not at other planets, keep that in mind). Starship quality is reflected in increased hitpoints. There are also technologies that directly improve the hitpoints of ships: http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_hitpoints.htm

Now, another thing that can affect the attack/defense rating of a ship is being in the same sector as one or more starbases with military modules. There are modules that increase the attack of all ships in that sector at http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_attackassist.htm and the one module that helps defense at http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_defenseassist.htm

Finally, there's one more value that hasn't been mentioned yet, and that is repair rate. Basically, each ship can recover a small percentage of its total hitpoints each turn. I don't know what the value is at first, it could be as low as zero, but there are many ways to improve it. First, certain techs (and one trade good) improve your repair rate: http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_repair.htm

Second, there is a starbase module that also improves the repare rate of all ships in the same sector: http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/a_repairassist.htm

Finally, it is possible, though disputed, that being in orbit of a planet improves your repair rate.

I can't promise that all of this information is 100% accurate, and I certainly won't promise that it's complete, though if anyone wants to make corrections/additions, I'm all ears.

If you go to the metaverse page, you'll find a tab on the left labeled "simulator." That's a combat simulator that will let you get a feel for what chances an attacker has against a defender, all other factors considered equal.

Hmm - I didn't know there was any dispute over being in orbit increasing your repair rate - I have definitely observed this in 1.02 and 1.03.

I'm pretty sure it's there as well, but not certain, and some people have claimed to have not seen it, so I felt it was only fair to throw in that caveat.

I think those people are mistaken. A dread will go from half hitpoints to full in about 6 months in orbit versus years out of orbit.

Yes, it is definite that there is a repair bonus for orbiting ships. It would be nice if someone could tell us the exact bonus though.

Thanks Popup Target for you response to the question. This is an issue I've been wondering about recently myself. Particularly though...

After a recent game in which an AI got lots (25 if I remeber correctly) Pre-Cursor corvesttes, I was reluctant to engage them because I don't understand how comabt works for ships in stacks. Common sense dictates that a stack of 25 corvettes is much stronger than 25 corvettes in stacks of 1.

Do you know exactly how it works?

Thanks in advance.

Stacking offers no combat bonuses. Stacking if for moving convenience only.

Dave Richardson,
In one of my games the Yor got about 90 precursors corvettes. I too was reluctant to attack them. So just to be in the safe side I brought a ship with very high defense and hit points (dont remember which one though, either a battle hammer or a dreadnought) and let it nearby these corvette stack, in the way between them and my starbase. They attacked, and were destroied one by one, my ship taking only very little damage. In my tirn I used it to attack, and since it had 9 moves and the corvettes were just alongside them, I could take them out again with very little or none damage. :)
I guess it's because their attacking points were 2 or 3 times lower than my ship defense points. So they never hit a single shot :D .
So, good luck! (though you might not need it ;) )

Getting a serious stack of Precursor Corvettes adds a nice military strength bonus (useful for bullying people around, or just to avoid being bullied), but unless it happens early in the game (when fewer warships are about), then they're just cannon fodder.

Now somebody getting 90 Precursor Rangers... *that* would make things interesting... :sniff!:

OK......

I think I still need a little clarification here though.

If I attack with a stack of two or three units - say a battlehammer and a couple of battlecruisers what actually happens? Does only one ship attack and defend? Do they all? If my stack is attacked which ship defends - the best defender? The ship at the top of the stack (however that is determined!)?, all of them? What about multiple ships in orbit - are they treated like a stack?

This stuff is pretty fundamental to gameplay once you get past the basics as I am now starting to do.

Once again thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to help out here.

It's been explained before: each round of combat the best attacker squares off with the best defender (exception being AM Missiles). This process goes back and forth until one stack (or sometimes even both) are destroyed. So, no matter how big the stacks, all combat is resolved ship to ship singularly.

fantastic! that resolves my question, and the questions those answere inspire.
I am currently involved in a viscious war with the drengin, and trying to keep the Yor out of my business. They were so far behind everyone tech wise I foolishly traded them non - mlitary techs and now they threaten my trading empire :^(. ah well, live and learn.

Popup Target, in another thread it was confirmed that planetary defenses only affect soldiers, not ships in orbit. I have also heard that being in orbit increases a ship's attack, but haven't seen this confirmed. Nor have I heard what order various bonuses are applied. (If the orbital attack bonus is applied before the bonus for a defender with higher defense than attack, it could actually be a penalty.)

In 1.02, planetary improvements that helped ship quality improved attack, defense and hit points. I haven't checked if this is still the case with the latest version.

I can confirm that being in orbit increases the attack (but not defense) of starships. I'm trying to bribe the Torians into becoming close to me in my current game, and I found that by pulling up the starship list and sorting by attack, it put all the dreadnoughts that are defending systems at the top, and all the ones that are just sitting there (I'm finally at peace with everyone, and at better than neutral relations, so I'm trying to go for an alliance victory) at the bottom to make it easy to write down which dreadnoughts I want to give as gifts.

I get the impression sometimes that stacking can be bad.

Pefect example today, I have a combat transport fully loaded in a fleet with a battle hammer. On the way to the invasion, it gets attacked by a damaged drengin dreadnought.

Big boom, all three ships blow up.

I loaded, unstacked the ships and had them in the same square... but not in a fleet.

Drengin attacked, battlehammer and dreadnough both blow up, transport is safe.

Seems to me that if I had 90 corvets in a stack, I could lose a lot of them in one attack... unstacked the computer would have to attack 90 times.

Of course fleets are convenient.

---

another silly thing I notice.... I have my monster fleet next to a planet, lets say best ship has 6 moves... the whole fleet can only attack six times and take out six ships, and sometimes I can't invade.

But if I take one ship out into it's own square and then attack, when it's done I can do the same thing again.... and do lots more damage than I could if I just used the whole fleet to attack.

Kind of silly, but nothing worse than the interface telling me my combat transport just has to sit there while they build more ships next turn 'cause I stacked.

I think the starship bonus's on a planet only effect the attack and defense of the ships it produces, NOT the hitpoints. . . right?
