Civ Starting Placement

I have noticed in the first few games I have tried on a large map that the civ's start rather close to my own initial star system leaving a lot of the galaxy open to be more easily colonized by the AI. I am mainly referring to large map with scattered stars.

Just curious if this is normal or am I just getting unlucky with the random number generator?

You've probably been unlucky. It does try to give you some breathing room.

Well you could always try varying your stars setting, and the larger galaxy you play on, the easier time it has.
