Trade Routes / Starbase Locations.

One thing I need to brush up on is trade and starbase trade modifiers.
Ok, if, for example I create a trade route b/w my planet and an AI planet that is 4 sectors directly north of me.
What is the most efficient placement of trade starbases along that route. One in my sector? One in theirs?
Starbases along the way?
If I can't afford to buld too many starbases and have to select only one or two locations - am I better off placing them closer to the AI end of the route or my end? (Ignoring any potential military/culture/production aspects that would obviously affect this).

I try to build a major trade route with one particular AI that I cultivate as my buddy. I start with sectors near my trade center but as soon as possible build it out to the AI's origin planet as well. The final goal is to get 4 +50% SBs in each sector along the trade route (choose your trade center and the target planet along a straight line on the grid).

If you keep beefing up the trade route and keep relations good you will have no problem affording all the starbases you want. I had between 3500 to 5500 coming in each month in a recent game along my trade route with the Altarians.

thanks. I saw your post on the strat group where you talked about having all 10 freighters on one uber-trade route - so I want to give that a go.
